Debbie Yow is an athletics leader who served 29 years as a Division I AD. The ACC's first female AD, she led Maryland to 16 national championships and transformed NC State from #89 to #15 nationally. A six-time Hall of Famer, she received the Corbett Award, collegiate athletics' highest honor.
Main Roles and Achievements
Head Coach, Women's Basketball (1976–1985)
At Kentucky, ORU, and Florida, she averaged 20 wins per season with a 70% win percentage (160-69 record). Each program achieved its first-ever Top 20 national ranking under her leadership, including a remarkable 26-1 season at ORU in 1982-83.
Athletics Director, University of Maryland (1994–2010) Became the ACC's first and only female athletics director for 22 years. Maryland's teams won 20 national championships (16 NCAA, 4 cheer) and achieved their best-ever federal graduation rate of 80%. The NCAA News named Maryland one of the Top 10 athletics programs nationally in 2009.
Athletics Director, Saint Louis University (1990–1994)
Hired Charlie Spoonhour as men's basketball coach, who went on to be named National Coach of the Year in 1994 and resurrected the program.
Athletics Director, NC State (2010–2019) Transformed the program from #89 to #15 in national Director's Cup rankings. The athletics department tied for #1 among all campus units in employee engagement and satisfaction in 2018. She was named the university's first-ever emeritus AD by the Board of Trustees.
